Standing Still

Time is standing still

At 2 am

In a rocking chair

White noise whispering us both to sleep

Both of us fighting to keep our eyes open

For different reasons, of course

It’s the fifth time we’ve done this tonight

In this moment

Time refuses to move

It sits with us

Rocking back and forth

Dragging its feet

Daring me to look at the clock again

In moments like this

Time feels mercifully slow

Giving me space to memorize

The weight of you

The warmth

The way your fingers curl around mine and hold my face so gently

But somehow

These moments stack on top of each other

And before I notice

Months have slipped through my hands

Time didn’t slow down

It just waited

Until I wasn’t looking

Time is standing still again

At 2 am

In a rocking chair

And I know one day I’ll give anything

To sit right here

One more time
